Mr. Geringer colorfully describes the daily life of pioneers in early ‘Checagou,’ the settlement along the river from Fort Dearborn that eventually became Chicago. He describes what the populace ate, how they dressed, what they did for fun and how well they got along with the local Potawatomi Indian Tribe. And he relates how the once-amiable relationship between white men and Native Americans decayed to the point of war.
